Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. It serves as a reboot for the entire Tomb Raider series and emphasises a new origin for the main character Lara Croft. The game was released on March 5, 2015 for Windows, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. On January 23, 2014, it was released for OS X, and on April 27, 2014, for Linux.
Crystal Dynamics began developing Tomb Raider after the release of Tomb Raider: Underworld in 2008. Rather then doing another sequel, they decided to reboot the whole series. Tomb Raider is now set on the island of Yamatai, an island where Lara, who is now more untested then previous games, must save her friends and escape the island's deadly cult.
Gameplay elements focus on survival, but there are areas to explore around. It is the first game in the series to have the main game and multiplayer game published by Square Enix, after they replaced Eidos Interactive in 2009. Camilla Luddington was announced to voice and perform Lara Croft's role in the game.
After a delayed release from late 2012 to March 2013, Tomb Raider received much hope and anticipation. When the game was released, the game was well received, with critics praising the graphics, the gameplay, Luddington's performance as Lara, and Lara's development. It sold over 1 million copies within 48 hours of its release. It has also sold over 8.5 million copies as of April 2015, making it the best-selling Tomb Raider game to date.
An updated version of the game, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, was released in North America on January 28, 2014, and in Europe on January 31, 2014, for Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
A sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was released in November 2015.
Players take control of Lara Croft and move throughout a hostile world filled with dangerous enemies and animals. Players can "free-aim" Lara's bow and the guns she finds, and engage in close-quarter combat and stealth kills. Survival Instincts allows interactible objects, enemies, and possibly animals, to glow.
Lara's skills can be upgraded throughout the game, and so can her weapons. Better weapons and gear can be found when playing the story. Players can complete extra quests and search for tombs.
